Is lack of sleep making your heavier?

People who sleep seven to eight hours per night are leaner than those who get only five or six hours, according to research from Laval University in Quebec. "When you're sleep-deprived, your body produces more stress hormones, which may increase your appetite," explains Michael Breus, PhD, cofounder of Sound Sleep Solutions in Atlanta.

Having trouble nodding off? Consider hitting the treadmill before, not after, work: One study done at Seattle's Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center found that women who exercised in the a.m. fell asleep faster at night than those who did a p.m. workout.

What is Oprah’s Oxygen Network Proclaiming About Sandy’s Newest Weight Loss Program?

After finding out about Thin & Healthy’s Total Solution®, the Executive Producer for Fitness Insider, a television show aired on the Oxygen Channel, says, “Thin & Healthy’s Total Solution® is the BEST kept secret in weight loss.”

No other weight management or fitness program offers the three components Thin & Healthy’s Total Solution® offers. Healthy Foods Education® teaches people how to eat their favorite foods and lose weight. That is unique and great news, since we love our pizza, chips and brownies. But it’s not what makes Thin & Healthy’s Total Solution® stand out.

Metabolism Retraining® teaches people how to fall in love with movement. Even those who’ve never liked exercise discover how easy it is to increase their metabolic rate with movement. That is unique, but also not what makes Thin & Healthy’s Total Solution® stand out.

What makes this program stand out is Life Success® which gives each member the inspiration, education and tools needed in order to tap into the motivation and determination that lie within them, thus helping them achieve their goals.

Donna Krech, CEO and founder of Thin & Healthy’s Total Solution® says, “Permanent weight loss is not about the food! It’s about the motivation. We focus on teaching our members how to maintain their motivation. Anyone can lose weight, but 97% of Americans who lose weight gain it right back, which is where we come in and change the standards.”

Thin & Healthy’s Total Solution® new location in Sandy is part of a network of over 200 locations distributing the program worldwide. It is the only complete concept, as it is the marriage of weight loss, fitness and motivation. The members enjoy the opportunity to work on losing weight, increasing their movement and improving their entire life, all at one place.

Kris Holt, a member at the location in Lima, Ohio, says, “I love how Thin & Healthy’s Total Solution® is always doing something new to make my results better and faster! Plus, I love that I don’t need to worry about going to different places to lose weight, change my life and get my activity in. This program really focuses on my life and that makes losing weight much easier.”

Thin and Healthy Utah is giving FREE nutrition programs to LA Weight Loss members

December 17, 2008. Sandy Utah. Thin and Healthy Utah is giving FREE nutrition programs to LA Weight Loss members. Because of closure at LA Weight Loss centers around Utah, Thin and Healthy Utah in Sandy is offering a hand.

Qualifying LA Weight Loss members must provide proof to verify their current membership with La Weight Loss to receive the free service. They may apply online at info@thinandhealthyutah.com or in person or at the office of Thin and Healthy's Total Solution located in the Union Square Shopping Center at 9480 S 700 E in Sandy, UT.

It's no secret that 3 out of 4 men and 2 out of 4 women in Utah have weight to lose. And what's more alarming than that is that 1 out of every 3 children are overweight or obese. With these local LA Weight Loss Centers closing their doors, it won't help Utah's staggering statistic.

Thin and Healthy Utah is on a mission. Owner Jed Judd says: "We are on a mission to make a difference in our community. According to statistics 3 out of 4 Men and 2 out of 4 Women in Utah are at an unhealthy weight! Think about that 3 out of 4 Men! That's a staggering amount of us - so Thin and Healthy wants to make a difference by the year 2010. Our goal is to give away 2010 free metabolism evaluations and 210 free programs by the year 2010!"

"Dieting doesn't work." says Judd. The increase in obesity over the last ten years is still accelerating despite new diets being introduced. Diets, old and new, have now had time to prove themselves but show little permanance as most Americans put the weight back on--and a little more—within a year or two.

As the American obesity epidemic gains pace and spreads through all age groups, the number of children under 6 who are obese is growing at an alarming rate.

Data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, a survey of seventh- to twelfth-graders launched in 1994 that included 2 years of follow-up. In 1996, 12 percent of the adolescents were overweight, while 6 percent had two obese parents, 14 percent had obese mothers only, and 5 percent had obese fathers.

“What we do as a family — our family lifestyles — matters for weight. Lifestyles aren’t just about individual behaviors,” study author Dr. Molly A. Martin, Pennsylvania State University in University Park said. The study is the first to demonstrate that the connection between parents and children’s weight is social as well as genetic. SOURCE: American Journal of Sociology, December 10, 2008. Thin and Healthy's Total Solution has a kids plan to affect this trend.

"Childhood obesity in the U.S. has reached pandemic proportions, and teaching young people healthy habits at a young age will last into adulthood. Our Thin&Healthy Kids program is a fun and effective way to teach children and their parents the life lessons for creating healthy, happy lifestyles….Many parents are setting their children up for a life of being overweight - and all the physical, social, and emotional problems that go along with that - without even realizing it.  Something has to be done.

Our experience working with children and families has made it clear that the desire to do the right thing is there; sometimes parents just need a little guidance and moral support!" SOURCE: Thin&HealthyKids website

ABOUT THIN AND HEALTHY'S TOTAL SOLUTION:

Headquartered in Ohio,Thin & Healthy's Total Solutions was started by author, speaker, and weight loss speicalist, Donna Krech and husband. It now has locations in most states all across the US. "My husband and I founded this company on a single principle. There exists a need that most ‘weight loss’ facilities do not meet. The need is for people to learn how to keep weight off. Therefore, Thin and Healthy exists for one reason. It is not simply to teach a person how to lose weight, but to teach our members how to never need to lose weight again."

Thin and Healthy teaches a healthy lifestyle to help people lose their weight and keep it off. "We take a 3 fold approach to weight loss: Healthy Foods Education, Metabolism Retraining, and Motivation. We do not participate in the weight-loss-weight-gain industry - we are the solution for permanent weight loss."

Thin and Healthy has as weight management program for kids, Thin&HealthyKids, which gives kids, parents, and families a helpful source of information about healthy eating, fun ideas to promote physical activity, and practical tips for smooth family functioning. It provides alternatives for the risky behaviors associated with Childhood Obesity, so that every child has a chance at a long and happy life.
Thin and Healthy's Total Solution reports it's plan is NOT a "Diet". Thin and Healthy contends, "Diets don't work for permanent weight control. By learning to eat your 20 favorite foods responsibly, use real grocery store items, include simple, easy and fun ways to move, and keying into your motivation triggers long term success can be achieved."

Utah LA Weight Loss Centers Closing

Thin and Healthy Utah will offer a FREE nutrition program to LA Weight Loss members who had the doors to their local facilities close on them. Please call us at 571-8870 or email at info@thinandhealthyutah.com for details.
The LA Weight Loss centers in Utah are closing. I drove by the locations on State Street and Draper and both were deathly dark and empty. One of our members confided her disappointment in the sales representatives selling programs even after they knew their locations were closing.
There isn't a lot of information about the closing of the LA Weight Loss locations in Utah, and the only site I can find looks like it's quite out of date (2007) so either their dates are screwed up, or it's inaccurate information on a large scale. I have not driven past any other LA Weight Loss centers in Utah, so I cannot confirm their status - if anyone else has information I would love to know more.
It's no secret that 3 out of 4 men and 2 out of 4 women in Utah have weight to lose. With LA Weight Loss going out of business that doesn't help Utah's staggering statistic - so we are going to step up and offer help. We here at Thin And Healthy Utah will offer a FREE nutrition program to those LA Weight Loss members who had the doors closed at their facilities. We just ask that those applying for the Free program provide verification of their current demise with LA Weight Loss. Please call 571-8870, email info@thinandhealthyutah.com, or visit or Sandy Utah location for more information.
Thin and Healthy teaches a healthy lifestyle to help people lose their weight. We take a 3 fold approach to weight loss: Healthy Foods Education, Metabolism Retraining, and Motivation. We do not participate in the weight-loss-weight-gain industry - we are the solution for permanent weight loss.

Utah Two Ballys Total Fitness Locations Closing

The closing of Ballys Utah locations came as a shock to so many of us. Thin and Healthy wants to make a difference by offering a FREE 10 lb program for former Ballys members. Please bring proof of Ballys membership to present at our front desk.
According to KUTV "The Midvale and Salt Lake City clubs are the only two in Utah and they are both closed. A company spokesman says they were under-performing along with 17 other clubs around the country. He said this was the normal way of reevaluating property. These customers wish they had thought of them in the process."
We know the overweight and obesity statistics in Utah are Staggering - 3 out of 4 men and 2 out of 4 women have weight to lose. 1 out of 4 of our children are already overweight! Thin and Healthy offers a solution to these sad statistics and we want to make a difference. 90% of people join a gym to lose weight - and that's what we do best!
We are offering free seminars across the Salt Lake Valley on the 7 secrets to losing weight and keeping it off, the 7 secrets to maintaining motivation, weight loss motivation assassinators, the top 10 ways to find 2 or more hours in a day, along with several others. If we can present these great seminars for your group, please let us know here.

Oprah Reveals She Weighs 200 lbs

It hit the airwaves yesterday. I'm sure you heard all about it. Oprah Winfrey revealed in the January issue of "O" magazine that she currently weighs 200 lbs. and that she has "fallen off the wagon" when it comes to healthy living. Oprah shares her feelings in the article saying she is mad at herself and embarrassed since she's gained 40 lbs since 2006.

"I'm embarrassed. I can't believe that after all these years, all the things I know how to do, I'm still talking about my weight. I look at my thinner self and think, "How did I let this happen again?" she wrote.

She mentions in the article that frustration led her to just eat whatever she wanted and she added how that is never a good combination.

So why is Oprah Winfrey the topic of discussion today? Because no matter who you are, what your career choice is, or how much money you make, you are not immune to the ill effects of the Motivation Assassinators.

Oprah's frustration (emotional reaction) led her to not make the best food choices. Couple that with lack of movement (she shares in the article that her out-of-balance thyroid condition helped her to create a "fear of working out") and you've got a recipe for an unhealthy and unhappy lifestyle.

Focus, Belief, Habits, Emotional Reactions, Energy, Surroundings/Social Influences and Time Management - these are the things that kill motivation UNLESS you know how to fight back.

We're at the time in the year when people say, "Come January 1st I'm going to..." Don't wait to arm yourself with the tools to overcome your Motivation Assassinators and achieve your goals. Go to www.neverendingmotivation.com right now so you never have to say, "Come January 1st..." ever again!

How Calcium Aids In Losing Weight

We all know we want calcium in our diets (ladies--at least 1,000-1,200 mg per day) but did you know that the latest study findings suggest that it also promotes weight loss?

A recent study found that women who paired 1,800 mg of calcium daily with a moderate protein diet (15% of calories from protein) absorbed 2.5 times less fat that those who did not. For some, this delivered a three-pound loss per week. The reason: With this nutrient combo, calcium binds to more fat in the intestines, forming insoluble compounds that are easily excreted.

If you are not taking a calcium supplement yet check out our Life Time Calcium Citrate with vitamin D. Life Time Brand Calcium Citrate is the most absorbable calcium on the market. Calcium is also important for the prevention of osteoporosis. If you are a soda/pop drinker calcium is important because the phosphoric acid in the soda depletes the bones of calcium so a supplement is very important!

Visit http://thinandhealthyutah.com for more free tips and information on healthy weight loss and fat loss 4 idiots. We are on a mission to make a difference in our community and worksites.

Top 6 Causes of Belly Fat - And How To Stop It

Ever wonder what the Top 6 Causes of Belly Fat are? You might be surprised to learn what these top belly fat causers are! You can find out more about No More Belly Fat by visiting Donna Krech's http://nomorebellyfat.com. Take time to register for her FREE ezine to "Bust" stress. You'll be glad you did!

You can pick
Relora™ up at our Thin&Healthy location in Sandy, UT or order online by clicking on the online store link from our website (http://thinandhealthyutah.com).

Top 6 Causes of Belly Fat:
(some might surprise you)
  • Stress > work, finances, family, weight
  • Hormones > imbalance or over-production
  • Muscle Tone > lack of abdominal muscle exercise
  • Actual Fat > overall fat cell content of body
  • Water > retaining water in body
  • Genetics > genes inherited from parents
According to government researchers, the link between stress, tension, and excess belly fat is clear. High levels of cortisol – a hormone produced during stress – can cause pound after pound of excess body fat to accumulate around your waist and belly… a health-threatening, figure-destroying condition affecting an estimated 47 million Americans… mostly women.

Stress is being shown to play a significant role in a wide variety of conditions and disease states. Recent work from the National Institute of Health (NIH) and other major research centers has demonstrated that stress is a significant contributor to immune dysfunction, cardiovascular disease, other age-related disorders, and to excessive body fat. Over 20% of adults have an obesity-like condition characterized by excessive abdominal fat. This condition is related to stress-induced hormone imbalances, especially imbalances of cortisol and DHEA. Until now, the only course of action for losing this fat has been stress reduction with exercise and diet. Relora™ can normalize cortisol and DHEA levels in stressed individuals, induce relaxation, and act as an aid in controlling weight and stress related eating and drinking.

In a recent clinical trial of women who took Relora™ three times a day for two weeks, 90% reported that the herbal blend made them feel less anxious, 87% enjoyed more restful sleep and 81% were cured of stress related eating!

Scientists credit the blend's magnolia extracts, honokiol and magnolol, and compounds of the cork tree called protoberberine alkaloids. This proprietary formula stabilizes cortisol to exert a relaxing effect on the nervous system, explains study author James LaValle, R.Ph., of the University of Cincinnati. And that sets off a biochemical chain of events that remedies weight problems and increases immunity to an array of stress related health concerns.

So in a nutshell, Relora stabilizes levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
That results in the levels of serotonin and dopamine (neurotransmitters that boost mood) being optimized. Also, levels of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep, return to normal. Improved sleep rebalances gastric hormones so that the ratio of leptin (which signals satiety) is once again higher than ghrelin (which signals the body to eat more).

So What Is The Weekly Cost of Dieting?

An interesting report on MSN shows the costs of 10 top diets:

"It's no secret that Americans are fat -- and getting fatter by the burger. Nearly one-third of U.S. adults are overweight, and another third are technically obese, as defined by a body-mass index of more than 30. And Americans aren't happy about it. Last year, we spent an estimated $46 billion on diet products and self-help books.

The cost of dieting for a week
DietWeekly menu cost ($)*Percent over national average
Jenny Craig137.65 152.8
NutriSystem113.52 108.5
Atkins Diet100.52 84.6
Weight Watchers96.64 77.5
Zone Diet92.84 70.5
Ornish Diet78.74 44.6
South Beach Diet78.61 44.4
Slim-Fast77.73 42.8
Sugar Busters69.62 27.9
Subway sandwich68.60 26.0
No diet54.44 -

And just as the article reports, money doesn't equal results. So you've got to ask yourself, "Does it really cost more to eat healthfully?" It's not always how much you spend that will get you results - it's how motivated you are to get the results you want. Losing weight doesn't have to be about dieting - aren't you tired of dieting? Give the diet thing a rest and start living! Losing weight is a lifestyle change. Permanent weight loss is NOT ABOUT THE FOOD. The secret to losing weight and keeping it off is actually about a balanced lifestyle that incorporates.....more

Obesity: The Killer at Large

Cindy sent me this YouTube link about a new documentary coming out about how bad the obesity rate in America is getting. According to the Deseret News:

"Filmmaker Steven Greenstreet wants the film to make a difference.

"We wanted this film to be a work of activism," Greenstreet said, activism that he hopes starts with the audience.

"The power lies with you," Greenstreet said.

The film shows various causes of obesity, from emotional eating, eating in response to stress or fear, marketing to children, unavailability of nutritious foods for the poor, government policy as it pertains to farm subsidies and lobbyists, and others."

What is it worth to make sure you and your loved ones are not part of the statistic?

THE ECONOMIC BURDEN OF OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY

I found some pretty startling statistics about how important weight loss is for the economic success of our country. The American Cancer Society labels obesity as an epidemic - I see it more as a pandemic. You can read the entire article here.

"Although not as visible as the health consequences of overweight and obesity, the direct and indirect costs of these conditions are well documented. (Indirect costs refer to such things as wages lost by people unable to work because of illness or disability, as well as the value of future earnings lost as a result of premature death.) Controlling the nation’s skyrocketing health bill will be difficult if the epidemic of overweight and obesity is not addressed in meaningful ways.

• Estimates of the health care and other costs in 2004 dollars related to overweight and obesity range from $98 billion to $129 billion.
• The average annual health care costs for adults who are obese are 36% higher than for normal weight individuals. Costs are more than twice as high for prescription drugs, 14% higher for outpatient services, and nearly 40% higher for inpatient services.
• Taxpayers pay a significant portion of these costs since approximately half of the costs are borne by Medicare and Medicaid.36 In addition, in 1998, obesity-related costs totaled $23 billion in Medicare spending and $14 billion in Medicaid spending.
• Medical costs and lost productivity due to obesity impose costs on employers.
• The cost to business of obesity-related health care costs totaled $15.4 billion in 2002 dollars. Health insurance expenditures made up the bulk of the costs, but sick leave, life insurance, and disability insurance accounted for 39% of the total. This does not include other significant costs such as lost productivity and increased absenteeism.
• One large study found that employees who had elevated BMI had average medical costs
more than 50% higher than normal weight employees.
• Obese employees are nearly 75% more likely to experience high rates of absenteeism
(seven or more absences during a six-month period) than normal weight employees."

What are we doing to ourselves? It seems like we as Americans are removing ourselves from the personal responsibility we have for ourselves and our costs to our employers, families, and communities. Healthy weight loss can be found, but it has more to do with the psyche then it does just the food. We've become more comfortable eating junk food, working (or playing) on the computer, and sitting on the side lines watching life pass us by rather than standing up and taking a stand to change our current situations.

The Secret To Permanent Weight Loss

The secret to permanent weight loss doesn't just reside in what we eat or how much we move - it resides in how well we handle the "curve balls" life throws at us all the time - the stress, the limited time, finances, freedom. These and many external factors all play into why we have weight to lose in the first place.
We at Thin&Healthy have 3 keys for staying motivated, and can teach you how to apply the keys so you will never need to lose weight again! America has proved the solution for keeping weight off is not in diet - look at how many diets come out each weak - or how many diet pills, appetite suppressants, and other gimmicks are out there - if that were the answer America would be the most fit nation on the planet! Even new 30 minute exercise routines, cardio classes at the gym, exercise videos and circuits come out each week - and why are they not helping?
Be honest with yourself and think - "what are the road blocks, what is it that distracts me from doing what I want to do and achieving my weight loss goals?" Is it really the food or exercise, or what drives you to (or away from) the food and exercise? If you keep focusing on "eating healthy and getting to the gym" will it really ever get you closer to your goal - or should you start at a different point - maybe adopt a different strategy this time?
The choice is yours - you can continue doing what you've always done and get the same result - or take a different approach and get guaranteed results. Let us show you how easy permanent weight loss can be while eating your favorite foods...real grocery store foods. It's got to be a lifestyle you can live with, why would you want to eat something different from what you're used to to lose weight? We can show you how to overcome the 6 what we call motivation assassinators, or life distractions, to learn how to overcome everything life throws at us. The weight comes off as a natural part of that - and stays off permanently.
We want you to be successful long-term. It's your choice and it's yours for the choosing!

Worksite Wellness is Heath Care Reform

Worksite Wellness Works

Today, more than 81% of American's businesses with 50 or more employee’s have some form of worksite wellness program, the most popular being exercise, stop-smoking classes, back-care programs, and stress management. Most employers offer wellness programs simply because they think the benefit is worth the cost. Yet business leaders continue to ask themselves how to control huge annual increases in health insurance premiums and health care costs.

For many companies, medical costs can consume half of corporate profits. For some companies, it's more than half. Some employers look to cost-sharing, cost-shifting, managed-care plans, risk ratings, and cash-based rebates or incentives. But these methods merely shift costs. Only worksite health promotion stands out as the long-term answer for keeping employees well in the first place, avoiding reactive medical costs.

"I lost a hundred and fifty two pounds. I have more energy than before I started the Thin&Healthy Program, and I feel GREAT!! It's like having a brand new life again." ~ Scott Thurston

Worksite wellness is heath care reform that works. Results from America's finest companies summarized here, are reason enough to think about an investment in your most important assets – your employees – and the impact this investment can have on your bottom line. In one study, national assessments showed that sick leave dropped 33.4% as a direct result of a wellness program. Worker's Compensation dropped 31.7% as shown in the Browne study. In a study done by Aldana, $3.60 was returned for every dollar spent on wellness.

She says to me, "You guys change people's lives, did you know that? What you do changes people's lives!" It's hearing things like that that remind me why we opened a healthy weight loss center in Utah.

Kristi walked away with $300 cash, teeth bleaching, dinner for two to Texas Roadhouse, a FREE hair cut, and a pedicure gift certificate.
Congratulations to all our contestants - you are all amazing and it was so much fun seeing each of you compete!

We're Speaking This Week!

I'm excited and nervous at the same time. I just registered to speak at the What A Woman Wants show this weekend at the South Town Expo Center. I'm going to speak on Donna Krech's "Your Seven Secrets To Losing Weight And Keeping It Off". It will be good being up speaking and I'm hoping for 10-15 participants, but nervous how it will all work out. Fortunately I'll have all day Friday to talk it up and see how the other presentations shake out so I can see what works and how to make my presentation.
When I met with Donna and Sandy earlier this month their suggestion was to speak more - so here I am trying to do what they say :). I hope this will have a better effect on getting our name out there than the KBULL Incredible Deal did. We didn't have any phone calls from that. I was very surprised and thought we'd get a lot! I'm absolutely in love with our approach to weight loss - apparently my passion hasn't caught on yet....so I'll keep working on that.

The Go-Giver

My GREAT friend Sandy Esterle sent me the most Super Fantastic book I've read in a while. I was impressed by Bob Proctor's book "You Were Born Rich", but the book Sandy sent me really hit home - in fact I read clear through it in one day!
The "Go-Giver" presents 5 ideas for stratospheric success and they are:
1. The Law of Value - your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment
2. The Law of Compensation - Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them
3. The Law of Influence - Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people's interest first.
4. The Law of Authenticity - The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself.
5. The Law of Receptivity - The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving.
It was such a good book, I would definitely recommend it to everyone!

Bridal Extravaganza

Last week we participated in the bridal fair at the South Town Expo center. Tammy Quintana with Erikson Enterprises Great Clips helped us out immensely. She decorated our booth (which looked amazing) and helped us pass out coupons and talk with participants.
This is a picture of Jenn posing like the Thin&Healthy poster girl Kim Thorpe. While Jenn won't enjoy having this picture on the web, I think our members will like having it posted here.

Thin&Healthy at IHRSA

We made a quick trek to the lovely Las Vegas for the Thin&Healthy training this month. Donna Krech and Sandy Esterle each made a presentation and training. IHRSA attendees and vendors were invited to attend as well - which made it an even bigger deal than normal. Weight loss is such an important topic, and sports and fitness clubs are looking for and implementing systems to help stop the epidemic of obsity. Don't beleive it's an epidemic? Do a google search or glance at MSNBC, some people are calling it a pandemic!

While the driving to and from Vegas were not a lot of fun, being able to spend time with Donna, Marcia, Sandy, and Adah and ask questions about marketing, business, and life success were a great help to Jennifer and I. I even got my personal 1 on 1 photo with Donna.

Do You Watch the Oxygen Network?

How To Reduce The Fat In A Burger By 50%

What do we mean by lean beef?

There has been some confusion over how to determine what lean beef actually is. Should you go by the actual cut of meat or the % lean designation, or do you need to buy organic or natural beef. Follow the tips below to help you choose the leanest beef and other ideas to help you cut back on the amount of fat.
  • According to criteria set by the USDA for meat labels, lean beef contains no more than 10% fat - 90% lean.
  • You can also find "extra lean" which contains no more than 5% fat - 95% lean.
  • The most reliable information is the "% fat" and "% lean" numbers.
  • The amount of fat on the meat label is the amount in the raw meat - Cooking the beef in a pan or on a grill will decrease the fat anywhere from 1-5 grams of fat depending on the % fat content. In the 95% lean beef, it goes from 6 grams of fat for raw down to 5 g of fat for cooked. In the 90% lean, it goes from 11 grams down to 9 grams.
  • Don't forget about the blot method. By placing hamburger on a few layers of paper towel after it's been cooked, can reduce fat up to 50% when using fattier meats.
  • Although organic and natural beef may have some benefits, when it comes to fat content those types still abide by the same regulations as the more common beef products, so no less fat in organic beef.

10 Tiny Changes for Big Weight Loss

Chalene Johnson, creator of Turbo Jam®, suggest 10 tiny changes that can have a big impact on weight loss. You can find her article on the Beach Body website. As some of you may have noticed, we have started offering Turbo Kick and Hip Hop Hustle classes since Jennifer certified last month.
Chalene suggests we "Never let a vacation or a special holiday be an excuse to overdo it the entire time. Go ahead, enjoy the occasional indulgence, but keep it reasonable. Here are 10 tiny changes you can make for big weight loss.
1. Wait 2 minutes.
2. W.I.W.M. "What do I Want More"
3. No one's perfect.
4. Focus. Make eating purposeful.
5. Don't skip breakfast.
6. Veggies. Most of your plate should have veggies and/or fruit on it at both lunch and dinner.
7. See what you eat. Eat your food off of a plate instead of straight out of a jar, bag, or box.
8. Don't buy it. Just eliminate the temptation.
9. Eat more fruit.
10. Watch what you drink. Cut back on or cut out high-calorie drinks like soda, sweet tea, lemonade, and especially alcohol.
I would definitely recommend reading the complete article for complete details.

10 Ways To Think Yourself Thinner

Beachbody.com has a great article that relates to a concept Donna Kretch has been writing and speaking about for a while. Just as losing weight and getting healthier won't happen overnight, improving your thought process will take time as well. Thinking Thin is as important as any part of losing weight - and is often overlooked. This "Mental Fat" must be worked out as much as the physical fat.
1. Visualize yourself thin
2. Make a list
3. Identify self-sabotaging thoughts
4. Distract yourself from cravings
5. Create small goals
6. Replace old habits with new ones
7. Keep a journal
8. Plan for the future
9. Be nice to yourself
10. Surround yourself with support
I recommend reading both articles, beachbody and Thinking is Thin-King as both provide support and insights for power in losing weight.

Biggest Winner Kick-Off

We're having our Biggest Winner Kick-off tonight at 6:00! I really hope we have good support from our members. This is a really great opportunity for everyone to meet and have a great time. These little competitions are a great way to build friendships and get great results - especially for those who are going through the program without a family or friend support.
Also, our French picnic at LaCaille will be given away this Friday. Currently Alie D. is our leader with 11 points for having her mother and aunt join the program! They are all doing so great - and are so much fun to have come around.

Midvale Harvest Days

We're just trying to get put back together after attending the Midvale Harvest Days and Draper City Health and Safety Fair. We made a lot of great contacts AND had a great time. Thanks to Tammy Quintana of Erickson Enterprises Great Clips for providing the FREE kids face painting at the event, and Cindy Judd - a Nikken wellness consultant and advocate for better liver health - for helping us out at the event.
This is a picture of Cindy and myself just after setting up. It got a lot warmer and I got a little sun as the day wore on.We had a pretty good set up near the Corron political party and Liberty Tax. I made some great contacts with Back to Health Chiropractic, SL County Youth Services, FUSE, and The Water Store.

We had a successful day checking people's body fat percentage, talking about diabetes prevention, and weight loss.

One thing they did that I thought was a lot of fun was a "Junior Olympics" for the kids. They had races and competitions for the children to do.

Weight Loss Hint

Stretch your meals to at least 20 minutes or longer. Your stomach, mouth and brain are all connected and it takes 20 minutes of chewing before your stomach signals your brain that you are full. To feel full and successfully lose weight on any program, you need to eat slowly for 20 minutes or longer.

Nutrition Hint: Oh, Nuts
They are good for you! After years of being labeled "bad" foods, nuts are garnering national attention as a tool in maintaining overall health. Nuts are being credited with helping to lower the risk of heart attacks, maintaining young, elastic skin and reducing the risk of Alzheimer's.

Tree nuts, such as almonds, hazelnuts, macadamias, pecans and walnuts, have no cholesterol and are high in unsaturated ("good") fats; they help reduce LDL and total cholesterol levels. One healthy fat, linolenic acid, is an example of an unsaturated fat that helps maintain good heart health.

Nuts are high in calories but are also cholesterol-free and they provide good sources of protein, phosphorus, zinc, magnesium, vitamin E and selenium. In small portions, nuts can be a healthful food choice.

Try these tips for incorporating nuts into your diet:

  • Instead of simply adding nuts to your diet, eat them in place of other snacks; that way you won't add extra calories.
  • Weigh the nuts before you eat them. Find a convenient sized container to store a single serving in (like a small mint tin). To measure out an ounce of nuts use a regular ½ ounce shot glass-2 shot glasses = 1 ounce.
  • Choose raw nuts. If you opt for dry-roasted or oil- roasted nuts, be aware that the calorie and fat content will usually be higher. If nuts are roasted with hydrogenated oil the quality of the fat will be compromised. Also remember that added salt may not be good for those with high blood pressure.
  • Avoid sugar-coated, chocolate-dipped and other candied nuts, as these add unnecessary fat calories.
  • Buy nuts in the shell; having to crack them open will slow your eating down!
  • Coconut and palm nuts are exceptions to the healthy nut rule as they contain high levels of saturated fats.

Ever Feel Like You're Running in Circles?

I'd heard this theory before and had brushed it under the table and forgotten about it, but Donna Kretch (CEO and Founder of Thin&Healthy) brought it out again....and since I sometimes feel like I am just running in circles, I though I'd post it here for all of us to enjoy...

"I'm so busy! I feel like I'm running in circles! Where does the time go?"

One of the most common things we all want is to find more time to do the things you really WANT to do. Is it really possible to make more money and find more time? YES!!! The answer lies within two letters. The letter "H" and the letter "V":

NEED / WANT NEED / WANT
H V

Imagine that the things you NEED to do are one side of the letter "H" and the things you WANT to do are the other side. We spend so much our time focusing on what we need to do all day long (like at work, for example) then we run the bridge to get to the other side of our lives.

When we get to the other side (for example, at home) we go, go, go in order to get all our home tasks completed. Then we cross back over the bridge to work and do it all over again, leaving us with no energy for either of the two sides.

Now, envision your needs and wants blending together without a bridge to cross. This looks like the letter "V." Here we can blend our needs and wants so that we can give our all at both.

Once you find that balance between needs and wants (or work and home, for example) then the two can work together instead of against each other. Life will become more fluid and balanced which will result in more productivity (at work) and more quality personal time (at home).

I have a saying that I live by: "Quality at work; Quantity at home." I am a speaker, author, business leader and an entrepreneur, but first and foremost, I am a mother and a wife.

You CAN find balance! Log on to www.neverendingmotivation.com and receive the 7 Secrets to Maintaining Motivation e-book for free.

You can find more time with your friends and family without losing sleep.

Life is too short to spend only doing what you need to do and not what you want to do.

Pool Party

The Treehouse athletic club sponsored a Draper City Event on the evening of Monday July 14 and it was a great event. We hosted a booth with a small fish pond for the kids and checked the body fat of adults.
Cindy, Tammy from Erikson Enterprises Great Clips, Jenn, and myself were all on hand to help with everything that was going on. Lynn from the Treehouse estimated close to 2000 people (including children) showed up at the event, so that's a pretty good showing.
It was definitely to our advantage having 4 of us in the booth. Both Tammy and myself were just trying to bounce back from being sick. I wouldn't have had the energy to keep up with everything, and was feeling very fortunate to have great family and friends there to help out.
The same night we launched our first Kids Nutrition class at Personal Mastery Martial Arts and hosted a super-star party for Don (see previous post)...so it was a very busy evening. We definitely learned our lesson about over scheduling ourselves....and I learned I need to check in with Jenn more often.

Dax 5K

We survived the Dax 5K race event on Saturday July 12th at the Draper City Park. There was a pretty good turn out of racers. Much thanks to Tyson of Northwestern Mutual, Jan of Bark Busters, and Tammy of Erikson Enterprises Great Clips for their help in the Kids Corner and bringing their games.
The sprinklers suddenly came on about the same time the race was starting so it got pretty exciting for a minute as everyone was scrambling to move papers, props, and games out of the way of the sprinklers.
Soon people discovered that putting garbage cans over the top of the sprinklers helped block the water (see the picture of Andrew)

...so many of us ended up with garbage bins right in the middle of out booths! hahahaha It made me laugh.

Super Star

We just had our super star party for Don Gerdy last night! Don is Great! He hit his first 20 lb goal in the middle of June - he is now down another 7 pounds and doing great. We'd been trying to plan his hooorah hooorah party at Chick-Fil-A for quite some time, and finally got a time nailed down late last week.
We first met Don and Sharon during the Sandy Slimdown. They were very diligent about making it to as many of the walks as possible, despite their busy schedules. It's been amazing to see Don's transformation. I always get a chuckle when I hear the healthy foods coaches telling Don to up his fat grams because I've heard it so many times. I imagine he feels the same each time he hears it too....hahhahhahahahaa.
Don and Sharon are two top notch people we have truly come to love and respect. It's awesome that in just 13 visits Don lost 20 lbs and 30 inches! I know Don loves putting new notches in his belts - and at this rate, he'll have to shave parts off his belt to keep it from wrapping around him twice!

The number of Utah children at an unhealthy weight increased dramatically from 1993 to 2006. In 2006, an estimated 22.5 percent of the 261,089 elementary school students, or approximately 58,745 students, were overweight or at risk of becoming overweight. More boys were overweight than girls. If the number of elementary school students at an unhealthy weight continues to increase at the current rate, in 10 years a total of 30.3% of elementary school students will be at an unhealthy weight.”

In 2005, more than half of Utah adults (55.2%) were overweight or obese. This amounts to over 977,000 adult Utahns! Nearly two-thirds of adult males (64.1%) and nearly half (48.2%) of females were at an unhealthy weight. The percentage of obese adults has grown from 10.4% in 1989 to 22.1% in 2005 (age-adjusted), an increase of 112%.“

Sandy 4th of July

The 4th of July was great! We had a very serious family emergency we were trying to recover from, but having a booth at the Sandy 4th of July has been one of the BEST things we've ever done...both for meeting people, but also for getting a positive image of Sandy.
Sandy did a lot of things right. I liked the layout of the days events and vendors, the shade was great, parade was in the afternoon, and the weather was awesome!
If I were to change anything, it would be our signage and I want to create a theme for our booth. I felt like our booth was pretty empty.
We were giving free Body Fat Tests. It made it easier to approach people, but some of the people I wanted to register for the FREE Year didn't because they didn't want their body fat checked. I did really like being able to interact and talk with people more when they stop by our booth. I really like having the body fat analyzers at these events with us.
One thing I'm not sure I like or not is having candy at the booth. Kids like picking some up, but most parents don't - and even question why we have it there....so we'll have to evaluate that further.

Obesity and a Fatty Liver

I've heard about fatty liver over the last year or so and only glanced at a couple of articles - but Cindy caught my eye here with a blog post to an article from MedicineNet.com "Body Fat, the Silent Killer". The two MD's from MedicineNet report, "the BMI correlates with the degree of liver damage, that is, the greater the BMI the greater the liver damage".
We see a lot of high BMI's through our place. Yesterday I had my first person say their doctor had given them a liver cleans. It was very validating to me to hear from another person that their doctor had recommended the cleans.
The interesting thing with fatty liver is there are not always symptoms, but that it elevates enzymes in the blood. So fatty liver is discovered when routine blood tests show elevated levels of liver enzymes (ALT and AST) in the blood. According to MedicineNet, "Doctors and public health officials project that obesity related liver diseases will become the leading cause of liver failure and liver transplantation in the not too distant future."
The bottom line, however, is that the single most effective treatment for obese people with Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver is to simply lose weight through diet and exercise. That's where Thin&Healthy can help. Our program is founded on the three pillars of the Total Solution: Healthy Foods Education, Metabolism Retraining, and Motivation.

Car Classic And UCE Review

Classic Car Show
Saturday June 28th we set up a booth at the Classic Car Show & Barbecue at Ardell Brown's Ranch in Draper. True to fashion, I showed up late and was lucky enough to squeeze between AAA and my friend Randall Limb of Extreme Graphics. The booths were not placed in an ideal location - along the fence back behind the car line up, with the food and auction placed closer to Ardell's garages.
Only a few brave souls dared visit the booths - mostly looking at the wheels on display by Les Schwab and Discount Tire and speaking with AAA about insurance.
At the suggestion of Lynn McDonald (of the Treehouse Athletic Club), I finally got brave enough to walk around the event and hand out coupons and collect registrations for a year membership we were giving away. She playfully encouraged her friends to register - it seemed like she knew about everyone there - and that made it more fun.
Our tent blew over - so I learned my lesson about always tieing it down. I had all the strings and stakes there to secure it to the ground, but didn't use them because it was such a calm morning. The breeze that blew the tent over wasn't that strong - but damaged the tent none-the-less.
Ultimate Combat Experience
After the car show, we helped Erikson Enterprises Great Clips with their event at the Ultimate Combat Experience at the E-Center. This was our first event at the UCE and was very educational.
We set up in between the US Army booth and a beer booth. Great Clips had some koozies and razors to give away along with some coupons. It was a little difficult to get people to take the free koozies - it seemed because they 1. didn't understand they were free 2. didn't want the coupons and/or razor inside.
I'm interested to see what another one of these events is like. From the information I gathered the Saturday night was not as big a draw as normal.

We're different...here's why

We are different from other weight loss places. They have a good sales model - help people lose weight....usually to gain it back again to lose it again. We want to help people lose weight PERMANENTLY - FOREVER! We do it through healthy food education, metabolism retraining, and motivation. Motivation is the biggest part of the solution - and is also the part that is missing from all the other programs out there.
